Whether you’re a fan of the cosmos, are looking for something new and intriguing, or are a fashionista trying to find the latest in nail designs – the galaxy nail art featured in this post will inspire you to pull out your favorite nail colors and some glitter. For the do-it-yourselfer, we’ve included a video tutorial to help you out since these designs do take some time to complete. But if you’re patient with yourself, you’ll have that tenth nail done in no time and be an expert in galaxy nail design!

Galaxy Nails Tutorial Video (Nails by Kizzy)

If you’re better at following written instructions, here are the steps the video tutorial covers:

1) Collect your nail art utensils. You’ll need base coat polish; top coat polish; a dark, medium, and light blue polish; black and white polish; glitter polish; dotting tool (or toothpick); tweezers; pieces of sponge.
2) Paint your base coat.
3) Paint two coats of dark blue polish as a base color.
4) Take a small piece of sponge and hold it with tweezers. Dip the sponge gently into white polish (not a lot – less is more!) and gently tap onto nails where you want your galaxy to be. This is usually done diagonally on each nail, but you’re free to choose which direction you prefer.
5) Sponge black polish on the edges of your nails.
6) Sponge medium blue polish on the edges of your galaxy, blending it with the white and dark blue.
7) Sponge light blue polish in the center of the galaxy (very lightly) and gently blend. You may need to add more medium blue if the light blue seems overwhelming. Blend both blues until you’re satisfied with your galaxy’s look.
8) Highlight different parts of your galaxy with a touch of white polish and blend to give it a glowing look.
9) Wait for your colors to dry, then paint entire nail with glitter polish.
10) Use dotting tool or toothpick to dot random stars on your nail. Make sure they’re different sizes!
11) Clean up your cuticles and around your nails with nail polish remover. You can use a sponge dipped in remover to gently clean up around the nails or a small brush.
12) Add your top coat. Fin!

2. Next, soothe and relax tired feet by soaking them in warm water; make sure the water is not scalding hot, or your feet will become red and you will feel anything but tranquil. Depending on how stressed and damaged your feet may be and how much time you have on your hands, your soak should last between ten minutes and an hour. The longer you have to soak, the better your results will be and the more relaxed your entire body will feel.

Helpful Tip: While warm water on its own will do the trick, you also may want to add your favorite soaks or essential oils to your bath for a more relaxing, spa-like experience. While a few drops of lavender oil can calm your senses, peppermint oil is also an excellent choice for tired feet because it refreshes and cools them!

5. Pat feet dry and massage them with a moisturizer. Again, while you can buy moisturizers, you could also massage your feet with an all-natural substance, such as olive oil, coconut oil, vegetable oil, or shea butter.
6. Now that your feet are clean and softened up, it’s time to focus on your nails, which should be cut and filed to a length that’s just shy of your toe’s edge. Buff nails using a nail buffer.
7. Next, apply a clear, strengthening basecoat to your nails and allow it to fully dry. If you aren’t a fan of color, your pedicure is finished at this point.
8. Apply a nail polish shade of your choice. You may want to apply up to three coats, depending on how dark you want the color to be. Just make sure that you allow each coat to fully dry before painting the next one, or you’ll end up with a goopy, gloppy mess!
9. Once your color is dry, apply a clear topcoat to seal the look. If you choose to take a step further and paint designs on top of the color, make sure you do this before applying the clear topcoat.

Official Shellac polishes and UV lights are only distributed by CND Cosmetics. Because CND typically only sells Shellac manicure products to licensed cosmetologists and beauty salons, it can be relatively difficult to get your hands on the proper supplies. While you won’t be able to buy official Shellac polishes or lights at beauty supply chains or your local big box stores, you can purchase them on Ebay and Amazon without a license, although polish shade options may be more limited than those offered within the beauty industry. Stores like Ulta, Sephora, and even Wal-Mart do carry other brands of UV lights than can be used in the process; if you decide to buy one that is not officially distributed by CND, make sure that its strength is at least 35W, or the curing/hardening process will not work properly and you’ll be left with a goopy mess on your nails.

While a Shellac manicure looks gorgeous and it can last for weeks, there are a few drawbacks to this type of nail process. For starters, it is undeniably more expensive than other types of manicures, even if you do it yourself, due to the cost of the UV light and special polishes. Because the process is a specialized one that requires certification to be executed in a salon, it’s also easier to botch at home and will likely require a few practice rounds before you perfect it. In addition, this type of manicure is not for those who like to switch designs on a daily or weekly basis, as removing Shellac polishes requires an acetone bath, which can weaken your nails if done too often.

If you’re able to afford it, getting a Shellac manicure in a certified salon (at least for the first time so you can observe the process) is the best route to go. With that said, here are some directions for how to pull off the process on your own and save big bucks:

1. As with any other type of manicure, preparation is the first step. It’s important to clean, file, and cut your nails before you even think about applying any sort of polish.
2. Slick your nails with a Shellac base coat of your choice and cure each hand for about 20-30 seconds under a UV light. Make sure to read the directions that came with your light, as it may have slightly different instructions than these, depending on its wattage. Tip: Apply a sunscreen to your hands before turning on the UV light in order to prevent them from getting burned. While CND Cosmetics insists that the UV rays emitted in the curing process are perfectly safe and are not cancer-causing, despite claims made in the media, you can never be too cautious about protecting your skin and nails.
3. Apply a Shellac nail color of your choice and repeat the curing process, leaving your nails under the light for about two minutes this time.

5. Wipe your nails thoroughly with a cloth or cotton ball coated in rubbing alcohol.
6. When the time comes that you want to remove your Shellac manicure, you will need 100% acetone. While regular polish can be easily wiped off your nails, the curing process makes color adhere strongly to your nails, so you will need to soak your fingertips in an acetone bath for approximately 5-10 minutes to fully remove the product from your nails.

Soak-off gel nails are often otherwise known as “soft” gel nails. Traditional nail polish is paint, wait forever, and go. It chips easily and can be a pain to remove. Soak-off gel nail polish is painted on as well, but after each layer, it is “cured” with a UV light. This means that the nails are placed under the light to dry before adding another layer.

How Are They Different From Buff-off Gel Polishes?

Buff-off nails are a different kind of gel nail, more commonly known as “hard” gel enhancements. The main difference between the two is how they are removed. Living up to their names, buff-off gel nails are non-porous, and therefore can only be taken off by buffing them down. Soak-off gel polishes, on the other hand, can be soaked in acetone for removal. They are more flexible and lightweight, which sounds better to most because they seem more natural out of the two, however, they do not last as long as their counterparts.

1. Long Lasting- Soak-off gel nails last for about 2 or 3 weeks, and that’s without chipping, s they always look like they were just done!
2. For Use on Natural Nail- It is possible to add length, but the polish is easily painted directly on top of your natural nails, just like traditional nail polish.
3. Dry Time- Using the UV light means that the gel polish dries in minutes. Forget those troublesome smudges, dents, and waiting forever!
4. Not As Damaging- Soak-off gels don’t require hurtful and damaging drills and extensive filing.
5. Easy Temporary Polish Change- Need to change the color of your nails for the night to match your dress? No problem at all. Just use traditional nail polish and paint on your gel nails. Remove the color when you are ready with a non-acetone remover.
6. Touch Ups- When your nail grows, there will be a small gap at the bottom of your nail that indicates the nail growth. A quick stop in the salon will fix you right up! A bit of the gel polish will be added to fill in the space, which will be a lot faster than getting them done all over again.

Any Negatives?

As with anything, there are a few, but they are very manageable.

Cost- Acrylics, hard gel, and silk wraps are the most expensive nails to upkeep. However, soak-off gel nails, even though they are cheaper, are 2 to 3 times more expensive than regular nail polish. You will also need to invest in a UV or LED light if you plan on doing them at home. This is a one time cost though, so it’s worth it.

Nail Stress- Anything that is not natural is most likely not the absolute best for you. Nails are no exception. Covering your natural nail with soft gel for two or more weeks (and filling it without taking them off) prohibits your nails from “breathing”. This could possibly lead to your nails becoming weaker and more brittle. It’s therefore recommended that you take a break in between sporting soak-off gel polish.

Time- Though there is a very fast dry time, the process of doing your own gel nails or going to the salon takes longer than if you were choosing regular nail polish. You need to prepare (smooth) the nails, put on a base, then the color, the topcoat, and finally use a gel cleaner to clean off any sticky residue.

Nail Growth- Nail growth will start to show and will become more noticeable as time goes on. It’s more noticeable with darker colors, so that may influence your color choice if that is something you are concerned about.

Is It Worth It?

The short answer is yes, and I hope you’ll agree with me after weighing the advantages and disadvantages. The feel of having well maintained and manicured nails does not match any other, and that alone is quite a good reason to get them. They are the least harmful of all fake nails. 1. Solid. Since oval nails are so unique, paint your nails a solid color. You do not need to do anything else to stand out. Choose a pale color, such as sky blue or lavendar for a soft look. For something with a little more edge, try a neon color or a dark color.
2. Crackle paint. You can buy crackle nail polish at any drug store. Use any color as the base and get the crackle polish in either black or white. Follow the instructions that come with your crackle polish.
3. Marble polish. Marble is another look that is very popular. Again, you can buy marble nail polish. It is available at many different stores, including a drugstore, but it will be more expensive than regular polish. You can make it yourself with polish you have leftover. Place a small amount of water into a paper cup and add drops of nail polish. Swirl it around in different directions to get a variety of looks. Place your nail over the polish and let it sit. After it dries, wipe off any excess polish with nail polish remover. This look works best with three or more colors, so it is perfect for the red, white, and blue schematic. Paint over it with a clear coat once the colors dry.
4. Polka dots. This is another simple design that is both on trend and classic. You can leave your nails plain, or paint a background in any of the colors before adding the polka dots with a toothpick. Feel free to get creative with the polka dots and place them any way on the nail you would like, You can stick to a pattern, or make the placement random. Do the polka dots in all the same color or use multiple colors on one nail.
5. Add an embellishment. Any of these designs can be made more interesting with the addition of a few rhinestones. Use a cuticle pusher and clear nail polish to apply the rhinestones where desired. Apply the rhinestone after about twenty seconds after applying the base coat so that the polish is still sticky. This will cement the stone and help it stick better. Avoid going overboard and stick to three or less stones on each nail.
6. Ombre background. Instead of a solid background, shade two lighter colors together. For example, use white and lavendar, and blend them together.
7. French Tips. There are multiple ways to take advantage of this look. One is to cover the whole nail with a design or nail. You could also leave the tips plain and only paint the stripes on the lower part. You could also keep the design on the tips and leave the bottom part of the nail plain. Instead of designs, you could use solid colors on either part, even doing one as a design, and one part solid color. If you want to have a more easy going look, don’t decorate the nail at all and leave it plain, except for adding the tips.
8. Diagonal. Divide your nail into two equal parts diagonally down the middle. Paint one side one color, and use a contrasting color on the other half.
9. Quarters. Divide your nail in half and then divide each half in half again. You can use up to four colors to do this design.
10. Checkerboard. Paint your entire nail white. Use a colorful nail polish to to add the squares to make the checkerboard pattern.
11. Crisscross. Paint your entire nail in a solid color. Using a toothpick and white nailpolish, draw a tic tac toe board that has more than nine empty spaces. You can make them uneven. The more irregular the pattern, the more interesting it will look.
12. Add nail decals. Nail stickers are cheap and easy to come by. They add a touch of pizzazz to any design. Follow the instructions that come with the decals and apply them over the black base coat.
13. Add a third layer to the mix. Make your artwork really stand out by adding another layer between the top and the base coat. Use a bright bold color such as red or gold and draw a simple design before adding the stripes. A simple design works best, using only one color. A heart or a streak of lightening would be a great design to use. For the lop layer, keep it simple, perhaps using polka dots or thin lines. For a fun twist on this, make your chosen picture black and use light blue polish for the fine lines. This will make your nails look like notebook paper.
14. Tie dye nails. Paint your nails with a white base coat to make the colors pop. Choose the first color and apply it as a small circle onto your nail. Make sure it is thick enough to move around. Continue adding circles of different colors until your nail is full. Use a toothpick to move the colors around. You can swirl the colors together, but make sure the different colors are still distinct.
15. Glitter. For a little bit of sparkle, put some glitter polish on. Because you don’t want your nails to be too busy, don’t use a base coat, or use clear polish for the base. Then apply glitter polish of your choice.

First, and most importantly, you have to decide who you are going to paint on your nails. This could be anyone! Disney princesses, Barbie, Care Bears, Powerpuff girls, super heroes, Winnie the Pooh, the Flinstones, Looney Tunes, and the Lorax, are all great ideas, but there are so many more. Whoever you can recall, it’s all possible.

Once you’ve got that figured out, now you have to mentally assess your nail painting skills. If you feel comfortable with your artistic skills over a small area, then you’re good to go! If you want to do it yourself but aren’t as confident then pick a easy design that you think you could mange. Instead of just having the same full character on each nail on a background of a base color, there are some more creative options worth trying out:

• If you are planning on putting just the face of the cartoon, then think about putting it on the tip of the nail. Face it away from you so that when you stick out your hand the person viewing them has the correct perspective. You could also put the face of the character only halfway on the tip so that just the eyes are showing. Depending on the character, it may add more personality.
• Of course, if there are multiple characters in the show or movie you want to portray, you have the option of putting a different character on each nail.
• If you are sticking with on character, it may get a little repetitive having the same design on each nail. To spice it up, think of more basic designs and common colors to use on other nails. For example, if doing Winnie the Pooh, you could have his face on one nail, a bee on another one or two, black and yellow stripes on another, a honey jar, and so on.
• You could also keep the same character but change the facial expression. Have the cartoon be happy, surprised, angry, etc.
• If you are choosing more elegant characters, such as Disney princesses, combine them with a classic and elegant look: the French manicure. You could even have the French tips each a different color matching the character, and then the character would go above.
• Really make your cartoon characters shine! Add glitter in the right places, or even rhinestones to accentuate your chosen design.

As mentioned earlier, basically any character or characters you can think of can be painted on your nails. It’s really up to who and what you remember. Cartoons are a great way of connecting with your inner child. Up to this point, I have mainly insinuated that adults would be the wearers of these designs, but in no way is that the limitation. Your children or nieces would absolutely love if you had a nail date and they could get to choose to put their current favorite characters on their nails. It may be hard to get them to stay still because they’ll be so excited!

No matter who the designs are going on, the end result is bound to look fabulous and definitely unique.
